Braving Miami during Super Bowl turns into some Risky Business...
The place to be Saturday night was the MarketAmerica.com Super XLI Party. The actual football game was the furthest thing from anyone's mind as thousands of people lined up along South Beach hoping to catch a glimpse of the A-listers. For the first time, live and in the flesh, I saw Tomkat. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were in the Magic City to support pals Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. Anthony did several of his hit songs and then invited his wife J.Lo to sing a couple of duets with him. While the power couple was singing, the crowd was oggling Cruise and Holmes who were dancing on the side of the stage and sharing a tender kiss. I never saw so many cell phone cameras in the air at once. People were stepping all over each other to snap a photo of them. Security guards asked the people to stop and several photographers got kicked out. But then they just took out their pocket size digital cameras and continued snapping away. It was at that precise moment that I actually felt bad for Tomkat. They were just trying to enjoy a night out together. They were watching a concert, dancing and just trying to listen to the music and have a good time. The public's obsession with this couple is so over the top. The only other couple I think has it worse than them is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
The chaos erupted when I spotted a woman jumping up and down near a side entrance directly facing the beach. "I just saw Tom and Katie! They walked right in front me!" She looked like she was going to pass out. Then she showed me a picture of them she had just snapped. It was confirmed. They second people spotted them on the side of the stage, all eyes were on them. Jesus could've been walking on water 20 feet away and everyone would've still be focused on Tomkat. I've seen a lot of celebs, but I'd never seen anything like that. Dozens of other stars were there like Fat Joe, The Hogan family, Cal Ripken Jr., Fergie and Wil.Iam from the Black Eyed Peas, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Tara Reid. I also heard Scarlet Johansson was hanging out in a special VIP tent created backstage, but never saw her. Still, the chaos Tomkat created was impressive and deeply frightening all at the same time.
I've talked a lot of smack about Cruise but now that I see what this guy has to deal with, I really don't know how he does it. Fame seems like it could be cool, but on that level, it's just too dangerous.
